Marlon Racz Memorial
Blacksmithing Scholarship
The SBA Scholarship was developed in 1996 to honour founding member Marlon Racz. It may be awarded up to one time per year to an individual interested in the art and craft of the blacksmith. Thescholarship value is currently set at CDN$500.
Selection will be made by the SBA Board of Directors based on the applicant’s written application. Applicants may apply any time during the calendar year. The applicant is not required to be a current member of the SBA.
Applicants must:
-
Be 16 years of age or older. Dispensation may be considered with parental/guardian written consent and the willingness of the specific instructor.
-
Be a resident of Saskatchewan.
-
Select a blacksmith course in Saskatchewan. Please see list below. This is not an exhaustive list of forging instructors in Saskatchewan. Other instructors do exist and will be considered should the applicant desire.
-
Describe in their one-page application why they wish to learn how to blacksmith and where they plan to learn.
-
Write a follow-up article about their experience to be published in The Rivet, SBA’s electronic newsletter to members. Photos are highly desired and encouraged. There is significant flexibility in this requirement. The article may be written by the applicant, in cooperation with the instructor or by a third party. Your submission could be photo-based with a caption for each image. Alternatively, you could be interviewed by an SBA Board member who would write up the conversation for publication.
The $500 scholarship will be paid in two increments: $400 upon acceptance and the class being organized with the instructor; $100 upon completion of the above requirements.
